Miss Manners

Every Monday MSN.com features Miss Manners' etiquette column. I've always thought it would be fun to write an etiquette column. Etiquette is definitely one of my main interests; I have half a dozen etiquette books and read the Miss Manners column religiously. Once I even wrote about business etiquette for honors credit in a class- I know, I am such a geek.

It's just so interesting, don't you think? Most social rules are so obvious and yet others can be so complex and elaborate (eating shellfish, for example). I can't stand when people think etiquette is an archaeic formality or just totally arbitrary. Being gracious, thoughtful, and courteous could never go out of style; and it is usually quite simple to trace back even some of the more obscure "rules" to these three qualities. Also, it's helpful to remember that those who are gracious, thoughtful, and courteous won't bat an eye if you use the wrong fork.
 But just in case:

  2. Maybe you should start a different blog along with this one where people can write in their etiquette questions and you can feature different topics each week. "Dinner Parties" one week and "How to.." another? I know I'd be a regular writing in! I need all the help I can get, and agree that these social graces shouldnt be over looked :)

  3. Oh my! I wasn't expecting to find a blog as lovely as yours while looking at Bree Van de Kamp images on Google - the title of your blog was what drew me to it in the first place. :) Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis are my two favorite elegant figures; you know, I wrote a 20 pages paper on Jacqueline Kennedy for a history paper in the 11th grade... that's why I know everything there is to know about her. I still read books about her religiously... goodness me, if you asked me something about her, I could even tell you all of the different theories/opinions and then tell you my opinion while referencing other sources. You can call me Jacqueline-obsessed! It's quite sad actually. ;)

I love etiquette books as well. I have a few longer reference ones (Emily Post and Amy Vanderbilt) but unfortunately, those aren't meant for reading cover-to-cover (although I tried to). I still keep them on hand for looking up certain situations, but I DO enjoy my thinner volumes for actual leisurely reading. :)

I hope that you continue to blog - your work here is beautiful! :)

    Best Wishes,
    Nina
