MacBook Makeover

Now that I've finally started making some money again, I decided to buy myself something that's been on my wishlist a long time: a MacBook Pro. My MacBook is four years old and isn't very powerful, so I was excited to finally be upgrading. I transferred the money for the new laptop and set out for the Apple store. By the time I got there, though, I had reached a conclusion: just because I had the money didn't mean I needed to buy the computer. In my mind, the only reason someone should buy themselves a $1,200 machine is that they need it. My current computer is still running fine, and I've never had an issue with it in four years. It's a little slower than I'd like, yes, and the inside trim is cracked in a few places, but there was no good reason to replace it. Being prepared to buy a new one just wasn't a good enough reason.

I decided to give my current laptop a makeover. Who doesn't love a makeover? Instead of buying a new machine that day at the Apple store, I made an appointment to have my operating system upgraded, something Apple provides for free. At that appointment, the Apple "Genius" told me that they also provide free replacement of the inside trim. He also told me that it would only cost about $40 to upgrade my memory from 512 MB to 2 GB. I suddenly saw a whole new future for my MacBook and me.

I love the new operating system and the replacement case trim makes my computer look brand new. My RAM should arrive in a few days, and I think that Apple will install it at new charge in about 30 minutes. So far, I'm extremely pleased with the decision to upgrade my existing computer instead of spending unnecessarily to buy a new one.

Does anyone else take pride in finding ways to save money AND still get your way?
